  • What is the weather like in Costa Rica in April?

    April 16, 2021 2 min read

Do you feel like this year is simply just flying by too?

How did April sneak up on us???

April used to be one of my favorite months with the arrival of Spring...Azaleas, Tulips, Cherry Blossoms, and that sweet smell of Spring rain!

BUT April in Costa Rica is a tad bit different than April in the US...

So what is the weather typically like in April in Costa Rica in the Guanacaste region???

April is the hottest month in Costa Rica; it's the last month of Dry Season, with temperatures around 95+ degrees, and a very BROWN landscape in the region of Guanacaste.

And let me tell ya, 95 degrees here in Costa Rica is way more intense than 95 degrees in New York or Atlanta...even my dog Gidget feels the heat in April and Chihuahuas LOVE the heat!

April is the last and hottest month of dry season, with the first rains typically starting at the very end of April here in Guanacaste.

(Except for this year (2021). I left for the US at the end of March to escape Semana Santa (Easter week) here in Costa Rica, and Rainy Season decide to start two weeks early! My friends said that the first week of April was super hot + humid, and now the intense heat has broken with the arrival of the rains.)

Why is April in Costa Rica so hot?

Costa Rica is located 10 degrees North of the Equator, which means the sun is much stronger because Costa Rica is that much closer to the sun. So intense that you can feel the sun burning your skin almost immediately during the middle of the day...especially if you're not wearing a high SPF!

In addition to the high temperatures in April, the humidity starts to rise as the season starts to change from dry to rainy humidity = HOT HOT HOT. 🥵 (But even with this heat, it's a welcomed change for tourists on spring break after a long, cold Winter!) And as soon as the rains start, the intense heat thankfully breaks!

And with the arrival of the rains, that means the clouds also start to come back in April!
As the season starts to change, the clouds start to filter in, helping set the stage for gorgeous sunsets.

In fact, in the past week, Gidget and I have chased several breathtaking sunsets....with one being on Gidget's birthday on Monday! So here's to the official countdown to Rainy Season = sunset season AND the Earth being alive + green again  --> woohoo!  After not seeing rain for months, I for sure will be doing a happy dance when the first rains arrive!!!

Are you ready for more magical rainy season sunsets too?!

    Magical sunsets just like this...
