A couple of weeks ago Wildsam Field Guides popped in my inbox with the subject line "Our favorite sunset spot in Savannah". As a sunset chasing photographer who splits time between Costa Rica and Savannah, I was excited to read Wildsam's favorite place in Savannah for sunset.
But, as soon I opened the email, my sunset chasing heart dropped...Wildsam had gotten it wrong. And wrong at one of my favorite places in Savannah.
I love The Wyld Dock Bar, but you can't see sunset there as it doesn't face west.
Don't get me wrong, The Wyld is an awesome location for happy hour drinks, and the ambience is perfect for that late afternoon to early evening gathering, but you won't see the sun set over the marsh there. If there are clouds in the sky, there is a chance that the sun will paint Eastern sky (remember my sunset chasing secret...sometimes the sunset magic happens in the Eastern sky!)
OK, now that we've clarified sunset at The Wyld, wanna know my top places in Savannah to watch sunset? Great! Let's chat about my favorite places to chase sunset in Savannah!
1. Georgia Aquarium on Skidaway Island
Savannah is surrounded by gorgeous marshes, creating the most beautiful canvas for sunset to paint the sky while the marsh glows in gold.
P.S. The sunset photo above ("Marsh en Rose") was photographed here!
2. Rooftop at The Peregrin at Perry Lane Hotel
Not all rooftops are created equal. Why? Because only at the good rooftops can you watch sunset! The Peregrin at Perry Lane in Savannah just so happens to be one of those good sunset chasing rooftops, with great drinks and the beautiful view of Chippewa Square with the sun setting over historic Savannah. Plus, The Peregrin is dog friendly!
3. Tybee Island Back River
One of my favorite things about Savannah is that within 45 minutes, you can experience historic downtown Savannah, revel in the gorgeous marshes, and then put your toes in the sand at the beach on Tybee Island. And not only is Tybee Island a great place to watch sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean, Tybee's Back River is a dreamy spot to chase sunset!
P.S. Wanna know a sunset chasing secret for Tybee? When watching sunset on Tybee Back River, don't forget to turn around and look to the East over the Atlantic Ocean. Sometimes the Eastern sky will turn all pastel...just like this:
"Sweet Summertime"
So the next time you're in Savannah, go chase some sunsets at my favorite sunset spots in Savannah! And yes, I may have a couple more favorite sunset chasing locations in Savannah...but I can't divulge all of my secrets!
